Public Address systems in Details
Public address systems are versatile solutions that combine voice broadcasting, fire and emergency alert functions, and also serve as a platform for background music or for delivering service and promotional announcements.
The system can be activated manually—by on-site personnel—or automatically, triggered by the fire or security alarm system. The purpose of the voice evacuation system is to promptly inform people of an emergency situation and guide them on evacuation routes. Effectively and timely addressing this task is sometimes even more critical than the operation of any other security subsystem. In the event of a fire or other emergency, alerting people in the danger zone must be carried out through voice announcements.
Facilities equipped with public address and evacuation systems are classified into five types, with the fifth type being the highest.
The equipment requirements for such high-class facilities are the most stringent. It is mandatory to provide voice evacuation alerts, divide the building into zones with a specific sequence for notifying occupants, enable feedback from alert zones to the fire control room or dispatcher station, and ensure coordinated control of all fire protection systems in the building. In addition, the system must include visual signaling devices.
Public address systems are integrated into the overall fire safety system. The audio pathway of the alert system is activated by signals received from fire detectors or other devices. Today, it is rare to find standalone voice alert systems. Typically, they are integrated with systems for background music, voice announcements, advertising, and/or dispatch communication.
A public address and voice evacuation system includes automatic devices that receive signals from fire detectors, as well as equipment responsible for the audio path: audio signal sources (tuners, cassette decks, CD players, digital devices), audio processing units, power amplifiers, and loudspeakers. The automation devices are configured based on the customer's specific requirements. The configuration of the audio path depends on the system’s intended functions—whether it’s solely for emergency alerts or also includes voice and background music broadcasting.
The system operates according to a simple algorithm: when emergency detectors are triggered, the alert system is activated. Upon activation of the input stage, the power supply units automatically turn on. If the main power is unavailable, backup batteries are engaged. Various audio sources are activated according to a pre-programmed algorithm. These may be digital or analog sources, depending on customer preferences. The evacuation message is broadcast in specific zones, following a preset sequence determined by fire safety regulations. Occupants receive clear instructions about evacuation routes and actions they need to take.
The presence of an emergency voice alarm system is a mandatory requirement in the fire safety system of any administrative or public building, according to current fire safety regulations.
